Viva.com Connects Directly to Multibanco, Portugal’s Payment Network

7 September 2026

Viva.com is the first international Bank to connect directly to Portugal’s national payment scheme, enabling MB and MB WAY payments across its merchant network in Portugal and throughout Europe.

Viva.com, the first Tech Bank in Europe for businesses, announces its direct connection to Multibanco, Portugal's national payment network, enabling MB card and MB WAY acceptance nationwide and across Europe. This milestone establishes Viva.com as the first international Bank to achieve direct connectivity with the MB Scheme, providing its network of local and international businesses with access to over 9 million MB cardholders and more than 7 million MB WAY users, for seamless in-store and online transactions.

Joining the MB scheme and offering MB WAY is the latest proof point of Viva.com's role as pan-European critical payments and banking infrastructure. Rather than treating Europe as one uniform market, Viva.com plugs into each country's domestic payment systems individually, turning a fragmented landscape into a single platform without losing local relevance. This is part of Viva.com's strategy to enable businesses to grow through high-performance solutions tailored to local consumer preferences, while supporting the expansion of domestic payment schemes into new geographies.

The integration brings acceptance of MB cards and MB Way - via QR code and contactless transactions - to Viva.com's omnichannel platform: in person, through Tap on Any Device technology on more than 1,215 Android devices and iPhone, and online, through the conversion-optimised Smart Checkout gateway. The platform also extends to marketplace environments, offering unified payment flows across all business models.

As a result, Portuguese merchants and partners can accept more than 40 payment methods, including MB and MB WAY, with real-time settlement, advanced reporting tools, up to 0% transaction fees, and tailored financing solutions. Viva.com merchants across Europe will also be able to accept MB and MB WAY payments from Portuguese consumers.

Pedro Saldanha, Country Manager of Portugal at Viva.com, stated:
“We are proud to be the first international Bank to have direct connectivity to the national MB payment scheme, processing MB and MB WAY transactions through our own terminal software. This is part of Viva.com's drive to deliver innovation for Portuguese businesses and enable their digital transformation. We are a one-stop partner for local businesses and European commerce.”
